Sayyid Akhtar Hussein Rizvi, known as Kaifi Azmi (14 January 1919 – 10 May 2002) was an Indian Urdu poet. He is remembered as the one who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures.[citation needed] Together with Pirzada Qasim, Jon Elia and others he participated in the most memorable mushairas of the twentieth century. Kaifi Azmi was a rare poet who practiced what he preached. Kaifi Azmi received many awards and accolades including the Soviet Land Nehru Award and Sahitya Akademi Award. In 2000, he was conferred the first Millennium Award by the Delhi Government and Urdu Academy. He was the recipient of “Padma Shri” one of the Indian Government’s highest civilian awards. The Maharashtra government conferred the Dnyaneshwar award on him in 1998. The renowned Urdu poet also contributed to Bollywood and gave us some timeless and evergreen lyrical gems, like ‘Tum itna kyun muskura rahe ho’, ‘Jhuki Jhuki si Nazar’ etc. His poems and ghazals are going to be remembered for a long time to come.
